The hallway before and after redecorating

One of my favorite features of our apartment is that it has two floors. It might not be all that practical given that we have baby and a dog, but I have a soft spot for cool stairways, so we will make it work.

Originally the steps had a layer of varnish giving them an unflattering yellow hue. We decided to sand, leach and wash with white pigmentation the steps to make the stair brighter.

The project was a really tested our patience as we just had a poor, small sander to help us. I addition the many corners of the stair needed to be sanded by hand. Luckily we were rewarded with a much fresher looking staircase afterwards, and the contrast between the bright wood and the dark walls works really well I think. By the way, the wall color is the same as in the living room to better connect the floors. The same goes for the floors.

We painted the doors and skirting the same color as the wall, like we did in the bedroom. It felt kind of tabu to put dark painting on the white doors, but the effect was just as cool as we hoped. Even the dresser under the stair was painted in a dark color to blend as much as possible with the wall. As a last detail we changed the doorknobs from steel to matt black. I think that fits better with both the building, and the dark doors.
